Tony Stone, Founder

Tony Stone was raised in La Ceiba, Honduras. He lived there during his Elementary and High School years. He began his fifteen year stint in the United States as a freshman at Stanford University. He graduated from Stanford in 1988 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering after having won many design prizes and awards and having designed and built a working two-man submarine that is on display at the San Francisco Maritime Museum on Pier 39. After Stanford, Tony held a number of design and aerospace jobs, working for McDonnell Douglass, Northrop Grumman, Keiser Marquart, and Aerojet. In 1999, Tony decided to leave aerospace and return to Honduras to found Adelante Foundation. Excited about the opportunity to help his native country, Tony is glad to use his technical and management skills as an Adelante Board Member.

Dick Hayes, Chairman of the Board

Dick was elected as Chairman of the Board in 2013 and had served as Board Treasurer since he joined the Board in 2004. His time as Treasurer afforded him with valuable experience regarding Adelante's work and structure, as well as the organization's needs in order to continue carrying out its stated mission. Dick is a graduate of the University of Colorado Business School and a licensed Certified Public Accountant in Colorado. He has worked for over 30 years with small and medium size businesses providing financial, accounting, transactional and tax services. He currently is the Executive Director of the Stephen B. Hard Foundation, manages the financial and business affairs of several Trusts and family partnerships and is an owner/partner of business interests in Colorado. Dick served in the Peace Corps in Peru as a financial and planning consultant to agricultural cooperatives. He is active in Rotary, has served as a National Trustee for Amigos de las Americas and has been active in the committee structure of the Colorado and National CPA organizations. He also serves on the Board of the Escuela de Guadalupe, a dual language school oriented to low-income children in Denver. Dick is married and has two grown daughters and two grandchildren.

Belkis Pina Niswonger, Board Vice President

Belkis Pina was born and raised in La Ceiba, Honduras. She attended the University of Louisville in Kentucky, where she got BS and MS degrees in Chemical Engineering. Since graduating, Belkis has worked for twenty years in the chemical industry in diverse positions including Process Engineer, Plant Manager, Global Supply Chain Director and Business Management. She spent the first part of her career with Rohm and Haas Co. and through mergers and acquisitions also worked with Elf Atochem and Total's Chemical's spinoff Arkema. Belkis is currently Business Director for the Chemicals and Energy Division of Zeochem, an international chemicals company part of the CPH Group.


Of her involvement with Adelante Belkis says, "From the first time I learned about Grameen's methodology I was exited about its potential to help alleviate poverty in my native country, Honduras. Fundación Adelante's micro lending and education programs are doing just that; we see the results in the improved quality of life of their clients.   It behooves us to help spread this work!" In 2013, Belkis was elected as Vice President of the Board.

Belkis lives in Kentucky with her husband Scott and their three sons.

Chris Arias, Board Secretary

Chris is another native of La Ceiba and brings twelve years of much needed banking experience to the board. After graduating from the National University in Tegucigalpa, Chris obtained a degree in Banking in 1999 from the University of Monterrey in Mexico. Her banking experience includes credit card operations, personnel and customer service management. She currently is the Atlantic Zone Manager for Banco Lafise. When not immersed in finances, Chris finds time to be involved in promoting Honduran tourism and serving on Adelante's board as well the board subcommittee tasked with oversight of Adelante's loan activities.

She has also served as the President of the Banking Association for the last five years, been on the Board of Directors of the Atlántida Chamber of Commerce for the last five years and is currently serving a two year period as Treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce.

Julio Castillo

Julio was born in La Ceiba, Honduras. He received a bilingual elementary and high school education that had great influence on his values and ideals. In 1989 he graduated from the University of Texas (Texas Tech University) with a degree in economics and international business. After graduating he had the opportunity to receive training in a company in Los Angeles in exportation, after which he returned to Honduras. He returned in 1991 to discover that he was really passionate about the ice cream business that his family had run for four generations. In his free time Julio enjoys time with his family, reading, mountain biking and participating in triathlons.

Elizabeth Darlymple

Elizabeth Dalrymple is a Vice President and Wealth Management Advisor with Merrill Lynch in Oakland, California. Liz graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a B.A. in Spanish. She studied at the University of Madrid in Spain and did graduate work at the American University, Washington D.C. 

She served in staff positions in the U.S. Senate and a House of Representatives Subcomittee, and was a founding member of the National Women's Political Caucus, Capital Hill Chapter. Liz returned to California in 1977 and worked on several political campaigns and non-profit organizations. 

Over the years, she served on the Board of Directors of a halfway home for women, a shelter for battered women, and was Executive Director of the Oakland Mayor's Summer Jobs Program for youth. She is married to John Kelson and they live in Piedmont, California. They have two children. 

Of her experience with Adelante Liz says, "Adelante serves clients who would be invisible to other lending institutions. These are smart, hardworking women who are dedicated to improving their lives and lifting their families out of poverty and within reach of a better life. I can think of no better investment of our time, money and expertise than to promote the spread of Adelante's work."

John Kelson

John M. Kelson is a lawyer.  He currently maintains an active civil practice in Northern California, representing parties in complex nationwide litigation dealing with consumer and employment issues in both federal and state courts.  He has acted as a legal consultant to Fortune 500 companies and the Republic of China.  He received his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1971, served with the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Division, and has established law offices in Oakland, California.  He resides with his wife, Elizabeth Dalrymple, in Piedmont, California, and has two children, Anne and John.

John Kendall

John became a believer in micro-finance through his friendship with Kim and Tony. John was an early supporter of Adelante and became a board member in 2006. He lives in the San Francisco bay area where he oversees information technology for an international asset management company and is chairman of a clean-combustion R&D firm. He has degrees in Chemical Engineering and Theology.

Pat Wiesner

Pat Wiesner is the retired CEO of Wiesner Publishing, a Colorado Company that publishes a dozen regional and national magazines. It also publishes a number of national insurance industry trade magazines.  He is an active pilot, a partner in Gunnison Valley Aviation in Gunnison Colorado, and does management and sales training for publishing companies. Presently, he serves on the board of Trustees of Western State College, and the Boards of Directors of The Colorado Aeronautical Board and The Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum. He has served on a number of other Boards in the past. Pat has a B.S. in Physics from Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y.

Janet Wiesner

Janet graduated from Mundelein College in Chicago and taught Home Economics and Science in the Chicago High School system. She resigned from teaching to have a family and now enjoys her 6 children, their 5 spouses and 13 grandchildren. For many years, she worked as a Realtor in the Denver market and then went on to be a sales executive with Recreational Business Opportunities Magazine and Colorado Biz Magazine.  She was also one of the very first female instructors of the Dale Carnegie Course. For years, she has been active in various charitable organizations and is currently involved as a mentor to women in the Denver Women's Correctional Facility.  Pat and Janet are retired and split their time between Castle Rock, Colorado and the Eastern Seaboard.

Juan Moya

Juan is originally from La Lima but has lived in La Ceiba for many years. With over 20 years experience in marketing, business administration and organizational planning he brings much expertise to the board. He graduated from Zamorano University as an agronomist in 1984 and later went back to teach. He graduated with a B.S. specializing in Ag Economics and Agribusiness Management in 2000.

Bob Sample

Bob Sample is the co-founder of the Bridge International School, the Spring Institute forIntercultural Learning, Spirit at Work, and other companies and organizations based in Denver, Colorado. Bob has been involved with the microcredit field for over 25 years. He learned about microcredit through RESULTS, a grassroots advocacy organization that has played a central role in the development of the field. Bob attended the RESULTS-led Microcredit Summit in 1997 and returned to establish two microcredit companies in Colorado, operating one of them, Credit for All, for three years. Bob is also a co-founder of the Colorado Alliance for Microenterprise Initiatives, a statewide trade association, and the “Friends of Microfinance”, an informal group of practitioners and advocates in Colorado that put on the Colorado Microcredit Conference in2005 and the wildly successful Social Business and Microeconomic Opportunities for Youth conference in March 2008, which featured speeches by Prof. Muhammad Yunus (GrameenBank) and Dr. John Hatch (FINCA). In Winter 2006 and Spring 2007, Bob taught graduate-level classes on microfinance at the University of Denver. Bob has presented several papers onaspects of microfinance at Microcredit Summits in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Cartagena, Colombia, Nairobi, Kenya, and Valladolid, Spain.

Bob Sample has an MA in Linguistics (specialization in Arabic) from Columbia University and an MPA in Urban Affairs from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Bob currently serves as the Colorado State Coordinator for RESULTS/RESULTS Ed Fund, and is a founding Board member of the Colorado Microfinance Alliance. In 2012, Bob joined the Board of Adelante Foundation.

Robert Johnson

Robert's network of friends consider him a naturally independent ambassador of goodwill.  In 2012, Robert Johnson joined Adelante Foundation's Board Of Directors. He has spent some time in Central America to acculturate himself to the people and the area. He shares both the Board and the Staff's passion around Adelante Foundation's mission. Adelante looks to him to bring fresh ideas, approaches, and an expanded network to assist our current and future endeavors.

Robert Johnson is a senior sales manager at Kraft Foods, where he has worked for more than 20 years. He brings servant leadership into every effort from encouraging mentoring both on and off the job. He graduated from Indiana University (Bloomington) after serving as Student Government Vice President (elected role). His BA degree majors were Economics and Geography.

His philanthropy efforts commenced during college with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity community service. He previously served two (elected) terms (1990 to 1996) on the IU College Of Arts & Sciences Alumni Board. He assisted IU Office of Admissions high school student recruitment efforts in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Robert independently supports a range of not-for-profit organizations ranging from USO, Bay Area Rescue, Amnesty International, Wheelchair Foundation, Smithsonian Indian American Heritage Initiative, etc.

Robert is an avid traveler, private writer, and novice photographer. He resides in the SF Bay Area but is always on the road...somewhere!

Viviannia J. "Bonny" Fleming

Viviannia J. "Bonny" Fleming joined the Adelante Board in 2012. She is an educator, mother and homemaker. She previously served as Elementary School Principal, Elementary and High School Teacher and also as Sports and Activities Director at Santa Teresa Bi-lingual School in La Ceiba, where she has lived since the 1970s. 

Bonny was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and grew up in New England. She proudly raised a family of six children and has traveled extensively with her husband throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as the United States for his work in international agri-business. She currently manages her households in La Ceiba and Massachusetts and speaks English and Spanish. She obtained her college degree in English and Education from Simmons College in Boston.
