BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Tony Stone was raised in La Ceiba, Honduras. He lived there during his Elementary and High School years. He began his fifteen year stint in the United States as a freshman at Stanford University. He graduated from Stanford in 1988 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering after having won many design prizes and awards and having designed and built a working two-man submarine that is on display at the San Francisco Maritime Museum on Pier 39. After Stanford, Tony held a number of design and aerospace jobs, working for McDonnell Douglass, Northrop Grumman, Keiser Marquart, and Aerojet. In 1999, Tony decided to leave aerospace and return to Honduras to found Adelante Foundation. Excited about the opportunity to help his native country, Tony is glad to use his technical and management skills as an Adelante Board Member.
President of the Board
Dick was elected as Chairman of the Board in 2013 and had served as Board Treasurer since he joined the Board in 2004. His time as Treasurer afforded him with valuable experience regarding Adelante’s work and structure, as well as the organization’s needs in order to continue carrying out its stated mission. Dick is a graduate of the University of Colorado Business School and a licensed Certified Public Accountant in Colorado. He has worked for over 30 years with small and medium size businesses providing financial, accounting, transactional and tax services. He currently is the Executive Director of the Stephen B. Hard Foundation, manages the financial and business affairs of several Trusts and family partnerships and is an owner/partner of business interests in Colorado. Dick served in the Peace Corps in Peru as a financial and planning consultant to agricultural cooperatives. He is active in Rotary, has served as a National Trustee for Amigos de las Americas and has been active in the committee structure of the Colorado and National CPA organizations. He also serves on the Board of the Escuela de Guadalupe, a dual language school oriented to low-income children in Denver. Dick is married, has one daughter and two grandchildren.
Jason Smartt graduated from the United States Military Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Leadership and Management with a concentration in Systems Engineering. Upon graduation, he was commissioned in the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. After commissioning, Jason served on Active Duty as a Field Artillery Officer successfully completing a tour of duty in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Upon leaving active duty, his passion to deliver useful and relevant products to consumers led him to a career in brand management. Subsequently, Jason earned his Master of Business Administration concentrating in Finance, Strategy, and Entrepreneurship from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Outside of work, Jason keeps busy mentoring current active duty servicemen and women seeking transition advice from active duty military to civilian careers. Jason also enjoys Crossfit, playing in an adult basketball league, hip hop music, and lounging with his two large dogs who think they’re still puppies.
Janet began her involvement with Adelante at its inception through her friendship with Tony and Kim Stone. Through the years she has been involved in fundraising for Adelante in the San Francisco Bay Area and joined the Board of Directors in 2016. Janet is a Bay Area native and currently lives in San Francisco. She is the Regional Sales Director for the Pacific Northwest for Elle Decor and House Beautiful magazines. Before that, she worked in radio advertising sales for 17 years in San Francisco and New York. Janet served three years on the Board of Directors at the Englewood Center for Children and Families and was involved in the Auxiliary for many years, serving as President her last year. She is an avid tennis player and plays in leagues throughout the Bay Area.
Rich has been an Adelante supporter since 2000 when he first visited Honduras with Tony Stone and a group of college friends. He was thrilled to join the Adelante Board of Directors in 2016. Rich is currently the Senior Vice President of Human Resources for VMware in Palo Alto, California. Prior to VMware, Rich lived in Helsinki, Finland leading Human Resources for Nokia’s Smart Devices Business Unit. Prior to Nokia, Rick was with Sun Mircosystems in Menlo Park, California. Rich holds a BS in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University and an MBA from the Anderson School at the University of California, Los Angeles. In his free time, he sings tenor in the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus and enjoys working on the never-ending projects associated with his 100+ year old home.
Pat Wiesner is the retired CEO of Wiesner Publishing, a Colorado Company that publishes a dozen regional and national magazines. It also publishes a number of national insurance industry trade magazines. He is an active pilot, a partner in Gunnison Valley Aviation in Gunnison Colorado, and does management and sales training for publishing companies. Presently, he serves on the board of Trustees of Western State College, and the Boards of Directors of The Colorado Aeronautical Board and The Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum. He has served on a number of other Boards in the past. Pat has a B.S. in Physics from Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y.
Janet graduated from Mundelein College in Chicago and taught Home Economics and Science in the Chicago High School system. She resigned from teaching to have a family and now enjoys her 6 children, their 5 spouses and 13 grandchildren. For many years, she worked as a Realtor in the Denver market and then went on to be a sales executive with Recreational Business Opportunities Magazine and Colorado Biz Magazine. She was also one of the very first female instructors of the Dale Carnegie Course. For years, she has been active in various charitable organizations and is currently involved as a mentor to women in the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility. Pat and Janet are retired and split their time between Castle Rock, Colorado and the Eastern Seaboard.
Bob Sample is the co-founder of the Bridge International School, the Spring Institute for Intercultural Learning, Spirit at Work, and other companies and organizations based in Denver, Colorado. Bob has been involved with the microcredit field for over 25 years. He learned about microcredit through RESULTS, a grassroots advocacy organization that has played a central role in the development of the field. Bob attended the RESULTS-led Microcredit Summit in 1997 and returned to establish two microcredit companies in Colorado, operating one of them, Credit for All, for three years. Bob is also a co-founder of the Colorado Alliance for Microenterprise Initiatives, a statewide trade association, and the “Friends of Microfinance”, an informal group of practitioners and advocates in Colorado that put on the Colorado Microcredit Conference in 2005 and the wildly successful Social Business and Microeconomic Opportunities for Youth conference in March 2008, which featured speeches by Prof. Muhammad Yunus (Grameen Bank) and Dr. John Hatch (FINCA). In Winter 2006 and Spring 2007, Bob taught graduate-level classes on microfinance at the University of Denver. Bob has presented several papers on aspects of microfinance at Microcredit Summits in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Cartagena, Colombia, Nairobi, Kenya, and Valladolid, Spain. Bob Sample has an MA in Linguistics (specialization in Arabic) from Columbia University and an MPA in Urban Affairs from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Bob currently serves as the Colorado State Coordinator for RESULTS/RESULTS Ed Fund, and is a founding Board member of the Colorado Microfinance Alliance. In 2012, Bob joined the Board of Adelante Foundation.
John became a believer in micro-finance through his friendship with Kim and Tony. John was an early supporter of Adelante and became a board member in 2006. He lives in the San Francisco bay area where he oversees information technology for an international asset management company and is chairman of a clean-combustion R&D firm. He has degrees in Chemical Engineering and Theology.
Maria Hubing has specialized in the business operations needs of the semiconductor and electronic manufacturing test industry for nearly 20 years. She is currently the Global Director of Sales Administration Operations for Advantest Inc. Under her leadership, the company has developed a flexible operating business model to successfully meet the requirements of a dynamic global customer base. Her worldwide team is responsible for Forecast to Cash Operations including sales and business forecast planning, sales process optimization, order processing, accounts receivable, and audit compliance.
Prior to joining Advantest, she led the Global Business Centers for the Automated Test Group of the Hewlett Packard (HP) spin-off Agilent Technologies, renamed Verigy upon going public.
Maria graduated from Berea College with a degree in Industrial Technology Management. Raised in La Ceiba, Honduras, her work has frequently taken her to Asia, Latin America and Europe, but she’s happily called Denver home for 20 years.
Dr. Cecilia Chi-Ham manages the global strategy process for the R&D portfolio at HM.CLAUSE, a vegetable seed company and business unit of Limagrain Group. She also leads the company’s intellectual property program. Additionally, she oversees the UC Davis HM.CLAUSE Life Sciences Innovation Center a business incubator for entrepreneurs.
Prior to joining HM.Clause, she spent over 11 years at UC Davis developing international initiatives, like the Public Intellectual Property Resource for Agriculture, Seed Central and UC Davis Chile, focused on transfer and commercialization of public-sector based agricultural technologies for humanitarian and commercial purposes. Her scientific research and publications span topics in agricultural biotechnology, regulatory and intellectual property analyses.
She holds a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry and specialized in plant biology during her post-doctoral research at Michigan State University and University of California Davis. She is a Patent Agent registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Cecilia is a native of Honduras; she currently lives in the Sacramento area in California.
Originally from La Ceiba, Jonathan currently serves as Managing Director for Europe, Asia, Pacific, and Latin America (EAPLA) programs for the Millennium Challenge Corporation. In this position, he provides oversight and guidance for the development and implementation of multi-million dollar capital investments and policy reforms to ensure achievement of program objectives and adherence to MCC principles of partnership, focus on results, and policy improvement. This includes the management of high-level negotiations with foreign governments as well as national and international stakeholders during the development and implementation of MCC’s signature 5-year investment programs. As Managing Director, he has overseen MCC programs in countries across the globe, including El Salvador, Georgia, Indonesia, Jordan, Mongolia, and Philippines.
Prior to this role, he was the MCC resident country director in Honduras, where he was responsible for providing MCC oversight of the implementation of the $215 million program in the country that focused on transportation infrastructure and development of high-value agriculture.
Jonathan has worked in international development through various positions with Crown Agents and as part of the executive team at Devex. He has experience in corporate strategy and human resource management at Corporate Executive Board, and has extensive experience in Latin America. Jonathan is a native Spanish speaker and is fluent in Portuguese. He holds a degree in international affairs from Georgetown University.
